LIFE+ “Protection of valuable natural non-forest habitats typical of the Orle Gniazda Landscape Park”

project is a response to the undesirable changes concerning semi-natural dry grasslands and scrubland facies on calcareous substrates and the need for protection of the valuable endemic Cochlearia polonica. The program is realized by the Śląskie Voivodeship – Silesian Voivodeship Landscape Parks Complex and will enable preservation and protection of the valuable non-forest habitats (Annex I of the Council Directive 92/43/EEC of 21 May 1992 on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora) characteristic of the Natura 2000 areas in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland (on the territory of the Orle Gniazda Lanscape Park), consequently creating a system of landscape and natural chains called the ecological corridors.

The immediate objective of the Project consists in taking protective measures, which will provide the opportunity to improve and preserve the ecosystems of semi-natural habitats, including inter alia:  xerothermic swards and thermophilic oak forests and the preservation and protection of the population of serratula lycopifoliaand carlina onopordifolia. Restoration and preservation of spatial mosaic of ecosystems will also have the impact on the improvement of the population of plant and animal species listed in Appendix No. 2 of the EU Habitats Directive. An important objective of the Project is to create a reserve of genes plant species threatened with extinction and typical of the region of Ponidzie, i.e. serratula lycopifolia, carlina onopordifolia, stipa pennata, hairy flax, prunus fruticosa and dictamnus.

The indirect objective of the Project will consist in the restoration of the pasturing of the sheep, which has not been present within the area for several decades. The aforementioned activity is intended to make it possible to restore the environmental habitats in a proper condition and make it possible to create new workplaces in the region and restore some cultural patterns, associated with grazing. Further to the above, it is intended to improve the economic status of the local population to the extent of the possibility of gaining additional income and contribute to the increase in tourist attractiveness of the region. The project additionally aims at activation of the local community in terms of raising awareness related to the threat and the need to protect the most valuable ecosystems within the region of Ponidzie.
